Newburn River Run – 22nd June 2011

Club Captain, Paul Hilton, writes the following race report.

Chris Meek runs his socks (and Shoes) of at Newburn.

One of our finest members done TBH proud on Wednesday night at the Newburn River run as Chris Meek stepped in as a late replacement for the injured Daniel Birchall.

It was a calm rainy ‘stuffy’ night, typical humid summer Tynedale weather. With Chris being the only TBH representative it was great to meet up with Denise Waugh and her daughter Victoria in the Big Lamp Pub Beer Garden.

At this point Chris was wishing he could just sit and have a drink but how pleased he was that he did not succomb . The field set off at exactly 7.30 as I ran behind for a couple of miles as a training run.

As I got back to the finish Denise and Victoria were already there waiting patiently for Chris to come in . Denise had counted the runners coming through by marking them on the back of her hand using Roman numerals, not unlike Robinson Crusoe on a desert Island . However Robinson Crusoe would have wished Chris was coming to rescue him, as he stormed back in XXXth place (30th for those who bunked off school) out of 280 finishers, in an approximate time of 40-41mins, which for the 6.5m course is very decent indeed, especially as he had to stop twice to tie his Shoe laces!

His mile splits for first 6 miles were 5.58, 6.12, 6.28, 6.20, 6.25 and 6.29. Which is excellent pacing and shows more maturity running years than Chris has actually done, and he reckons it took about 30 seconds to tie his laces!
Report was done before official results were published so apologies if they’re slightly out but it was a tremendous run from one of our top up and coming Vets – Chris Meek.

A massive thank you must go to Frank Watson, one of the race organisers, who kindly allowed Chris to use Daniel’s number for the race.

Full results to follow shortly.

well done Chris, excellent running and a sign of things to come. You have come alone to the club and quietly worked away at your performance and are getting up with the top vets at the club. Looking forward to seeing you going from strength to strength

  1. 30 seconds to tie your laces, I’ll bring the bairn along tonight to give you some tips to help improve your times…

I ran this race last year and I know how tough and demanding it is. Well done Chris, fabulous effort.
