This was the third and final fixture in the NEYDL for 2021 and all was to play for with Blaydon and the combined TBH/Birtley team being a mere point apart, so either one of us could have come out victorious. Despite very hot conditions, various club records were claimed, and PBs were set on the day, with everyone giving their all. I think David Carr after his 1500m race on his hands and knees, summed up how much effort was put in.

Our 12 athletes covered an impressive 38 events in total. I’ll try writing the race report mentioning PBs and club records as I go along, but please do tell me if I miss anything as there was a lot of data to trawl through!!

Under 13 girls

Anna Carr set a 200m PB posting a time of 42.0, then went on to equal her recently new Long Jump PB of 2.28. She then ran 3:21.8 in the 800m race.

Alanah Perowne set a new PB of 16.5 in the 100m which also broke the club record. She went on to run 35.2 in the 200m and capped it all off with 3.48 in the Long Jump for a new PB of over half a meter, breaking her previous club record.

Lucy Nichol claimed a new PB in the 100m in a time of 20.1 and then threw 8.31m in the discus.

These 3 U13s girls, along with Niamh from Birtley, then ran in the 4 X 100m relay for 3rd place, all of which contributed to the clubs points total.

U15 girls

Only Ruby Colver was in this category for TBH this time, missing her first event (the Long Jump) by her Dad mixing the days up, assuming it was on a Sunday. Luckily, she was able to replace it with the discus later on in the programme. This then had the added effect of me then worrying that other people may get the wrong day, so apologies if I rang you in a flap asking where you were, it was all Paul’s fault!!

Ruby ran a very impressive 30.6 in the 200m setting a new PB and claiming the club record in the process. She went on to run 2:57.8 in the 800m and rounded it up with 9.78m in the discus, which was all adding to the club’s points total.

Under 13 Boys

Henry Pickett had a very good day, coming second in the Javelin with a 9.21m throw setting a new PB for himself. He then went onto improve his long jump PB to 2.41m and ran a solid 3:07.2 in the 800m.

Freddie Palmer’s promise of cash from his grandma seemed to be still on the table for PBs and club records and it’s still inspiring him. Freddie ran a very impressive 29.7 in the 200m to claim a new PB and club record, he followed that up with 2:31.3 in the 800m breaking his own club record and bringing his PB down a few more seconds, and he finished up with a throw of 8.16m in the javelin, setting a new PB in that as well. We really should set up that Just Giving page for Freddie’s Grandma, she’s getting cleaned out on a regular basis now.

Liam Whitelaw ran an excellent 14.5 in the 100m setting a new PB for himself. He ran a 5:53.8 to win the 1500m and jumped 3.27 in the long jump to finish off his day.

These 3 boys along with Callum from Birtley were second in the relay event.

Under 15 Boys

Harry Snaith made his first appearance at an NEYDL fixture and was rewarded with PBs in each event. He ran 33.8 in the 200m, 58.8 in the 300m and finished off with a jump of 3.70m in the long jump.

David Carr ran a PB and broke the club record for the 100m in 13.9 seconds. He only managed 1 jump in the Long Jump due to clashes with track events, but still managed a very credible 3.75m and finally ran 5:07.6 for second place in the 1500m

Luis Nichol then stepped up to run the 100m narrowly missing his own club record posting a time of 14.8. He then went on to run a PB of 31.6 for the 200m, getting ever closer to the club record for that distance.

Jake Moir set a PB and lowered his own club record in the sprint hurdles running 17.4 for second place. He ran 2:36.8 in the 800m and then threw 18.84 in the discus to break his own club record by a meter and a half.

We had David and Luis with 2 Birtley runners finish first by default in the 4x100m relay, being the only team taking part.

U17 Boys

We only had Zak Kettle in this category, but luckily Birtley had 3, so they made up a relay team and took the win with the other team ending up disqualified.

Zak ran a PB of 2:27 in the 800m, set a PB and broke the club record in the long jump with 4.55m and broke his own club record in the discus with a throw of 13.5m which also earned him second place overall.

As I mentioned earlier, things were very close between us and Blaydon, but Blaydon seemed determined to win, so got huge numbers out that we just couldn’t compete with. Blaydon won this fixture, claiming the overall league victory, but we were a very close runner up, so not too bad for our first year in the NEYDL.

One of my aims going into this league, was to have good representation from TBH in our joint team with Birtley, which I think we managed. I also wanted to encourage the TBH juniors to give things a go, to set PBs, club records, to race, compete, but above all else, to enjoy it and have fun doing so. I think I got things right, appreciate we could maybe make improvements for next year, but I have learned a lot through all of this, and hope we can come at next year’s league from a stronger and even more positive way, with all the knowledge and experience we have gained from this year.
