This was our first ever NEYDL fixture and a big thanks to Emily Laws, Gary Curtis, and the whole Birtley team for making this a smooth introduction to the League for us all. A massive congratulations to the Birtley /TBH team, because after a hard day of athletics, we ended up winning the fixture!!

There was still everything to play for, as we knew we were leading at the time of the last announcement, but we had very few athletes in some of the later events, and the relays may have been crucial to secure the win.

For the 4 X 100 U13 girls relays, after some expert practice with a stick on the playing fields we decided on the running order. Niamh from Birtley agreed to go first, handing onto Anna Carr, who handed onto Lucy and finally Alanah bringing the team home in 3rd place.

Birtley closed full teams in some of the other events, and our final run of the day was by Zak Kettle who led out the U17 boys 4 X 100 relay, leading after the fist 100, with some very strong runs from the Birtley lads bringing the team home in first place.

We had to wait for the results to be uploaded the following day before finally discovering that the win was ours.

Please bear in mind, if you are in Year 6 to Year 11, and you have been inspired by the fantastic performances above so that you are tempted to come along to the next fixture, then please let me know and I’ll have a chat about how you can get involved.

We are hosting the next fixture on Sunday 20-6-21 which is also at Churchill playing fields, so we need as much help as we can get from parents. If you can help, then let me know as I’ll start to compile a list and look into what duties we need to cover.
