Henry Pickett provides us with his thoughts from a brilliant day of racing in the sun (and rain!).

“We got there early to put up the gazebo, annoyingly the second we started trying to get it up it started to rain. I had 4 events, 800m, 4x100m, javelin and discus. My first event was 800m in which I was 2 seconds off my PB which was annoying but I still think I did well. I then had a bit of my lunch (tuna pasta) and then got ready for my second event javelin, I was able to get a very good score of 17.67m which I was very proud of as it is a club record. I then did discus which I got three no throws meaning none of them counted which was annoying but it wasn’t that big of a deal. We watched other people do events like Alanah with her long jump and Freddy with 1500m in which he came 1st. I then took part in the relay with Charlie, Aidan, Me and Jack and we set a new club record. It was very hot and I almost got burnt but, in the end, like always, it was very fun.”

Under 13 boys
Aidan Whitfield, in his first NEYDL fixture, was first to race for TBH in the under 13 boys 75m hurdles and took the vacant club record with a time of 19s. The 100m was well contested and Charlie Kilgour posted an excellent 15.1 to take 3rd place and improved his PB by 0.7s in the process. He ran again in the 200m and clocked 31.9s for 4th place, improving his PB by an unbelievable 2s – fantastic running. The 800m saw Henry Pickett (2:53.1) and Aidan Whitfield (2:58.5) run very credible sub-3 minute times. Jack Whitelaw competed in the 1500m and, in some very hot conditions, posted a brilliant 5:32.9. Henry, Jack, Aidan and Charlie put together TBH’s first U13 100m relay team and ran a respectable 66.6s and took the vacant club record. In the field events Charlie Kilgour set a new club record in the long jump with a distance of 3.59m and Jack Whitelaw was close behind with a jump of 3.39m. Henry Pickett extended his javelin club record with a throw of 17.67m, Jack Whitelaw was pushing hard and threw 12.74m.

Under 13 girls
Melina Bourgenot-Lewis had a good run in the 100m and set a new PB with a time of 16.7s, closely followed by Anna Carr who reduced her PB by 1.2s with a run of 17.5s. The 800m was very well contested with 4 runners from TBH. Anna Carr (3:13.5) set a new PB. Eliza Palmer ran 3:02. Florence Snaith had a big PB of nearly 6s reducing her time to 3:00.8. Kora Howorth was first home with a club record of 2:58.3. In the field events, Melina Bourgenot-Lewis jumped 2.73m in the long jump with Anna Carr achieving a big PB just 1cm behind. Kora Howorth, in her 1st NEYDL, also bagged a javelin club record with a throw of 8.27m. Finally, in the discus, Florence Snaith threw 9.13m and Anna Carr threw a PB of 8.89m.

Under 15 boys
Freddie Palmer ran 14.3s, just outside his PB, in the 100m. Joe Whitfield ran 30.7s in the 200m and then ran a club record of 48.9s in the 300m with Joel Tanser just behind in 50s. Freddie Palmer demonstrated his breadth of experience by stepping up to the 1500m and ran a club record of 4:53.5. In the long jump Joel Tanser was just shy of his PB with a jump of 3.93m. Freddie Palmer turned his hand (excuse the pun!) to the discuss and threw 11.04m.

Under 15 girls
Adeline Bourgenot-Lewis was just shy of her 100m PB with a run of 15.1s and 32.5s in the 200m. Alanah Perowne, also in the 200m, was again a fraction off her PB. Alanah, stepping up to the 800m for the first time, showed how her distance running is progressing with an excellent 2:46.2s. Ruby Ditchburn, at her first NEYDL of the year, ran 2:57.0s. Ruby then stepped up to the 1500m where she set a club record of 6:18.6s in her first race over that distance. Alanah and Adeline competed in a mixed relay team with Birtley and were 2nd with a time of 58.4s. The long jump was well contested with Alanah sealing the TBH top spot with a PB jump of 3.79m. Adeline Bourgenot-Lewis and Ruby Ditchburn were close behind, both jumping 3.43m.

Under 17 men
The under 17 men is one of the most competitive sections of the junior club and the camaraderie they showed is excellent. David Carr set an excellent PB and club record in the 100m with a time of 13.6s. Zak Kettle and Jake Moir competed in the 800m with Zak first home in 2:11.6s and Jake setting a huge PB (and more importantly beating his Dad’s PB!) of 2:20.8s. David Carr had a solid run in the 1500m with a time of 4:57.5s. Jake and Zak went head-to-head again in the 400m hurdles with Zak coming home first in a new club record. The 4x100m was contested by Zak Kettle, David Carr, Jake Moir and Isaac Pickett and they managed to come 2nd with a new club record of 54.5s. David Carr managed to set another club record in the long jump with a 1st place and a leap of 4.78m. Jake had a great throw in the discus and was just off his PB. with 18.2m. Lastly Zak attempted to regain his club record from Isaac Pickett but despite Isaac struggling with his throws, Zak didn’t quite have the distance with a throw of 17.05m.

Under 17 women
Hope Moir was our only U17 but she bagged herself a club record in the shot put with a distance of 6.15m. She also threw the discus 15.47m.

The club has had a hugely successful NEYDL with many club records set. Overall the combined team of Birtley and TBH came 2nd in the division and are well placed to see more strong performances next year.

  1. As well as the under 15 girls taking part other day. Ruby wished she’d done the previous ones as she really enjoyed herself.

  2. This was Aidan’s first athletic event. He has never seen hurdles or done hurdling, I was immensely proud of him for taking part in this event. Like Ruby he wished he had taken part in more of these athletic meetings. Thanks TBH for encouraging him.
