A great first track fixture of the year, which was held under Covid restrictions, so athletes were only able to turn up, run, then leave, but that didn’t stop each athlete claiming or beating a club record.

Hope Moir, Freddie Palmer and Jake Moir all ran in the 800m races before lunchtime, with some considerable successes.

Hope’s heat went out very fast, the first 200m being covered in 36 seconds, so not surprisingly the pace dropped on the second lap. Hope sensibly held onto the back of the group for the first lap, then did what she could on the second, holding off a couple of the others all the way to the line. Hope ran 2:58.85 to claim the U17 Girls club record, finishing 4th in her heat.

Freddie ran a very disciplined and well thought out race, hitting his target of 2.40 and taking 7 seconds off his previous PB. Again a fast first 200m (in about 37 seconds) resulted in the pace slowing later on, but Freddie held on and his sprint finish gave him a time of 2:40.68 which put him 3rd in his heat. He had the added bonus of claiming the U13 boy’s record from David Carr by a mere 0.12 of a second for his efforts.

Jake’s previous PB of 2:53 set in 2019 was also obliterated with him running 2:35.2 for second place in his heat. Jake broke the clubs U15 boy’s record by nearly 5 seconds, taking it away from Zak Kettle who is now in the U17 boy’s category for the track.

Zak Kettle turned up later on in the afternoon, and as mentioned previously, we weren’t able to stay, so missed Zak posting a 3,000m PB (11 second improvement) and claiming the U17 Boys record in 11:09.71 as a bit of consolation for losing his U15 boys 800m record.

This was a very slick, well organised fixture, with very thorough Covid measures in place, so well done to all the officials and NECAA for organising it.

We will be looking for names for the NEYDL fixture very shortly, so please do support the club if you can, as this is our first year joining up with Birtley in this league, and we’d like to have a strong TBH representation if possible – details to follow shortly.
