Hello everyone!
As we move into March with a spring in our step (myself excluded due to injury) you will be seeing a change in the sessions. In general terms, shorter efforts but at a faster pace- more 5k and some 3k. We have had a good winter of endurance work based around 10k pace. It has served everyone well across the board but especially in the 10k to HM race distances.
As the focus moves to shorter track races/5k etc it’s a good time to think about speed. We’re not training for 100m, so it’s still very much endurance but we build on the speed. The warm up and drills become even more important in terms of avoiding injury. Form is always important but faster running does not mean overstriding, heel striking etc.
Now you may be in a block of marathon training and wondering, ‘how does this benefit me?’
It’s important to train at different paces and as I’ve said we are not doing sprint training. How will you pick up the pace in the final mile of the marathon- by practising running at a faster pace. Alternatively drop down into a group that is running the efforts at your 10k pace.
Sometimes I have set distance and time for the efforts; your leaders will decide what is the better option.
Thanks as always to all the leaders who deliver the sessions. I hope you enjoy the training.
