September’s Member of the Month: Dave Moir!

As well as completing the Dragons Back race in September 2024 (full race report here), Dave is also one of the founding members of Tyne Bridge Harriers, had had various committee roles, and set up the Juniors section of the club. No small feat and a very well deserved Member of the Month!

What have you been up to since the Dragon’s Back race?
I’ve been recovering from the Dragon’s Back race in early September 24. The race organisers suggest 4 weeks of nothing, then 10 weeks of light training, so I’m just about getting back into racing and training.

What is your ideal pre-race snack/breakfast?
Porridge with crunchy nut cornflakes.

What is your ideal post-race snack/meal?
It’s usually more about quantity than quality.

Are you a hot or cold weather runner, and flat or hills?
Cold and hills!

How many times a week do you tend to exercise, are there other things you do that you think help your running?
I have one rest day a week and always do S&C sessions, one at Momentum the other at home.

What is your favourite song to listen to while running?
I never listen to anything whilst running, I always want to focus on the running and what is happening around me.

What is the main piece of kit you couldn’t do without?
The only thing I can think of that I wear regardless of whether I’m training or racing (whatever the event) is my Runderwear.

What has been the most surprising thing you have found since you started running?
It can take over your life.

Who is your biggest running inspiration?
Simon Pryde after reading his MDS report…… oh wait, he still hasn’t finished that has he?
Actually, I’d say the real inspirations are the juniors that keep up their running and make it to the senior ranks, particularly the girls as I know they face additional challenges and the dropout rate is much higher. So I’m going to say Ruby from our Juniors, and that way she can’t ever stop running!

What is your proudest running achievement?
Finishing the Dragon’s Back and being first in my age category. 340 started the full distance only 124 finished it.

What is your happiest running memory?
Great Ethiopian Run with 13 other TBH members.

What is your favourite running event and why?
North East Harriers League – I’ve always loved cross country and the NE has the best league in the country. The organisers very rarely get the recognition they deserve, so big shout out to them please!

What is your biggest challenge to running and training and how do you try to overcome this?
Time commitment due to family and work pressures. It’s all about the planning.

What is your main training goal at the moment?
Swiss Alps 100miler, I was surprised to discover there is 10,000 meters of climbing involved.

What are your favourite things about being a member of TBH?
Initially it was being part of a club which was largely comprised of my mates. The club has changed massively since we set it up, but a lot of the original ethos and friendliness still remains.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about starting running?
Join a club like ours. We literally cater for all levels and abilities and you are far more likely to stick with it if you have some company, encouragement and some joint experiences at races.
