Congratulations to Ian Hudspith (Morpeth Harriers) on his magnificent victory in the 2013 Bridges of the Tyne 5 Mile Road Race. His time of 24:46 not only secured 1st place but also set a new course record.

On a sweltering evening, 332 runners completed the out-and-back course along Newcastle Quayside, with Morpeth Harriers taking 2nd and 4th places (Matthew Nicholson and Ross Floyd respectively) with Durham City athlete, Daniel Jenkin, finishing 3rd.

Tyne Bridge filled the next three spots with Steve Cairns, Sparrow Morley and Kevin Jeffress finishing 5th, 6th and 7th respectively.

In 8th place overall, and winning the Ladies race for the 2nd consecutive year, was Aly Dixon (Sunderland Strollers) in a time of 27:52.

Following the event, race winner Ian Hudspith sent David Appleby (a member of the race committee) this message;

“Hi Dave. Thought last night was a great event. Really well organised and superb atmosphere. Had a buzz to it. Good support from the drinkers on the quayside. You’ve got a great club there. Course is quick. The guy on the lead bike was excellent. Got everyone out of the way. Thanks for the entry and will be back next year. All the best. Ian

The 2013 Bridges of the Tyne 5 Mile Road Race couldn’t have happened without the following;
The Tyne Bridge club members who volunteered their services for the evening;
The race officials for ensuring the event met all quidelines;
Mark and Chris from Race Timing Systems;
Bill McGuirk for presenting the prizes;
Tyne Bar for providing a terrific Race HQ (and great post-race food and drink);
Newcastle parkrun for the loan of their equipment;
The 5 Mile Race committee who – between supping cups of tea and coffee – did an enormous amount of work behind the scenes ensuring the race went off without a hitch.

Many thanks to you all.

    Congrats to everyone who smashed the course last night and thanks to the Marshall’s for encouragement. Spot on night out “Doon the Quay”

  2. Thanks for a brilliant event – very well organised and marshalled. thanks to all the marshalls for their cheers and encouragement. I just have one small gripe which I mentioned when I collected my prize but I was given second place FV45 despite having a quicker chip time than the person getting 1st FV45. I wouldnt normally make a fuss but your pre race instructions specifically asked us not to go near the front unless we anticipated finishing in the first 25 as this would not affect results as all times were chipped. I therefore adhered to your request as I did not anticipate finishing in the first 25. It has clearly affected my result and had I known this I would most definitely have started further forward. Wendy Marks.

    According to the results on Race Timing Systems, Mary Martin, Bib 228 was first lady o/60. Susan Bayliss was first o/65, 4 minutes behind Mary

    1. Hi Bill, thanks for contacting us and pointing out the error. I can confirm Mary will be awarded 1st Lady o/60. Apologies for the slip-up.

  3. Double D – are results based on gun time rather than chip time? I think for future races it would help if it was made clearer pre race as I am sure many more faster age category runners would start nearer the front. In races with chip timing I have always understood apart from the major placings (eg 1st to 3rd in the open category) all other results done on chip timing?

    1. Hi Wendy, sorry for not replying to you sooner – I’m awaiting clarification from one of the race organisors regarding your earlier query and will get back to you as soon as possible.

  4. Thanks

  5. Great race, well organised and marshalled. I’ll be back next year for some more. Well done to all at TBH.

    Wendy, sorry for the confusion caused by the inclusion of the statement. It was intended to encourage slower runners to start further back in the starting pens. We advised that standing further back wouldn’t be detrimental to times. The decision to award prizes based on gun time should have been specified in the pre-race advice. This is something we will take on board. We were really pleased that you came back to take part in this years race and hope this hasn’t put you off returning to run next year.

  6. Thanks for the clarification. I will be back as I enjoy the race. In other races I have done chip timed races and prizes have been based on chip times rather than gun times so maybe this is something to consider as if gun time you may find next year a bit of a battle at the front as everyone who thinks they may be in with an age category prize will be jostling to the front.

  7. Hi TBH, thanks for having RTS do the timing for the event, I really enjoyed being back on the Quayside. From our point of view on the discussion above, when it comes to the finish time/chip time results – on all standard running events we time its is always finish time over chip time through all results. The only events this is not done are – for example – obstacle events, triathlon, duathlon and some cycling events. This is because they often have wave starts or staggered starts so finish time becomes chip time. Hope that helps. Cheers Mark – RTS

  8. Mark – I appreciate and accept the comments. However in future I think this needs to be made clearer at the start as the definite implication in the pre race info sent and the pre race briefing that standing further back wouldn’t effect timings does imply that results will be chipped. Maybe there needs to be info that states all results will be beased in gun times. I deliberately started further back than I normally would as a result of the pre race info.

    Anyway, it hasn’t dampened my enthusiasm to return to such a great race & I hope to see everyone there again next year..

    ChEERS to all the voluntEERS, thanks for being part of it and marshalling on a difficult, busy night on the hot quayside! Professional stuff. I also liked the lead bike, ringing the bell to notify folks up ahead.

    Excellent race once again! Must echo the thanks to the organisers and the marshals, who did an amazing job. I was slightly concerned that the number of pedestrians on the Quayside (especially outside the Pitcher and Piano!) might have obstructed the race, however everyone was brilliant, and the marshals did a fantastic job in that tight spot. Very well done, and will definitely see you again in 2014! :-)

    Thank you for a great race. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I lost some weight in the heat! And thanks for the V65 Voucher – I rarely win anything these days.
