parkrun round-up: 10th November 2012

Tyne Bridge were represented at three parkrun events this weekend, Newcastle, Gateshead and Bushy Park; with a total of 17 members turning.

For those who don’t know the history of parkrun, it all began in 2004, when a group of 13 mates decided to run around Bushy Park in London.  Eight years later, almost 800 runners descend onto Bushy Park on a weekly basis and there are over 60 parkrun events held throughout the World.

Rob Wishart was amongst 783 runners at Saturday’s Bushy Park, finishing in a respectable 32nd position.

Meanwhile, a bit closer to home, there were 15 members at Newcastle parkrun, and I don’t know what they had to drink on friday night but seven out of the 15 managed to run a PB. So well done to the following; Naomi Virgo, Phillippa Nichol, Sara Sedgley, Scott Wilkinson, Kevin Cheetham, Colin Dilks and Euan Clubbs. It was a special day for Andrea Hayden too, who made her parkrun debut.

Also making their parkrun debut was Julie Shaw, who tackled the undulating, multi-lap course at Gateshead (Saltwell Park). Well done Julie.

Personally, I found that 3 large glasses of wine and a vodka and coke on Friday night with the TBH girls did the trick!

Actually, I give some of the credit for my 35 second improvement on my PB to the 23 minute pacer who was yelling at me for the last 2km to not let him pass. The pacers are a great addition to the event. I hope they continue to do it.

  1. Can I point out to all readers, Tyne Bridge Harriers does not condone drinking of alcohol prior to racing.
Afterwards most certainly, especially if you’ve ran a PB, but not before hand haha!!

Congratulations on your PB Pip, and you’ll be happy to hear that pacers are used at Newcastle parkrun on the 2nd Saturday of every month.

Hehe, slapped wrist! Thanks – I’m really happy to finally be sub-23 mins, though my knee isn’t so much. Good to know about the pacers :)

  2. Well done on all the PBs, everyone! And Pip, interesting to hear about the pacers… didn’t know they did that at Parkrun, and great to hear they give such encouragement :) I really need to do a Parkrun sometime (y’know, one day, in the distant future, when I can drag myself out of bed early enough ;))

In addition Stevie Barker ran a PB of 18.27 and finished in 9th place after finally signing up for TBH last week. Louis Goffe did a stirling job of pacing round in 19 minutes, although I unhitched at museum corner.
