Piers Pye-Watson: 24 Hour Rowathon

Club member, Piers Pye-Watson, writes this appeal…

On Thursday the 12 July I will be embarking on a individual 24 Hour Rowathon to raise money for the Arthur Rank Hospice Charity. This will be taking place on the ground floor of Citygate (in the room just behind main reception) and starting at Noon on Thursday the 12 July and will finish the Noon on Friday the 13 July.

In November 2011 my Mother was diagnosed as being terminally ill with advanced metastatic breast cancer. This news weighed heavy on our hearts as a family and preparation for the future was an unavoidable but fearful challenge. Before Mum could return home, she required further care to improve her strength and so she stayed at the Arthur Rank Hospice.

Although apprehensive, my Mum could not have been in a more comfortable and caring place. The attention that she received was so heartfelt and our family will forever be thankful. Rather than being in the way, we were made to feel at home so much so that we spent a few nights there in order the remain closer to Mum. Not only that, the staff helped us prepare for Mum coming home by arranging for all the necessary equipment and future nursing. On leaving the Arthur Rank Hospice, Mum’s health and spirits had greatly improved and we had a fantastic Christmas together.

Our Mother died the following March but without the support of the Arthur Rank Hospice she would not have been as strong as she was for that time and nor would we.

This charity needs to raise over £1million each year to continue to provide its service and any donation that you can spare will give support and comfort to individuals and families during a challenging time. For more information on the charity please visit their website at http://www.ahrc.org.uk/ .

There are a few ways in which you can give your support. Primarily, please visit my JustGiving page at http://www.justgiving.com/ppw24row or, if you are constantly on the move, you can donate by texting ARHC99 £5 to 70070.

If you wish to follow me in my preparation for the 24 hours of non-stop rowing, please visit my twitter page https://twitter.com/#!/piers_pw .

All support is appreciated, from a donation to just a visit on the day for some friendly encouragement.

Thank you.

Piers
