The 12 Dave’s Of Christmas #5 – Dave Young

Today, on Dave 5 of our ‘run up to Christmas’, Dave Young gives us an insight into why he became a runner & what has happened since he started running.

Dave Young

When I was a teenager I wasn’t really interested in athletics, I grew up in Whitley Bay and used to spend a lot of my free time fishing.

Once I left school, got a job, and discovered girls and beer- drifted away from fishing and decided to take up running to keep fit.

My first ever “race ” was the Junior Great North Run, I was 17 at the time. The race distance was 5 miles and from then on you could say I caught the running bug.

Since then I’ve completed most of the local races (numerous times), I’ve done 9 marathons, the great north run over 20 times, and virtually every other distance down to 400m.

I was a relative latecomer to joining a running club – I didn’t join one until I was in my 30’s -I judged my general fitness on my “north run” times and they had started slipping from a pb of 1:26 to 1:35 ish. Within a couple of years of joining a club I got my pb down to 1:17 for the half marathon and went on to do a sub 3hr for the full marathon.

I used to regularly run 60+ miles a week, but nowadays I’m happy if I do 40 miles a week – I mix up my training with a bit of swimming and plan to get out on the bike more once the weather improves.

I’m at the stage in life now where I’m never going to get pb’s , but love my running and hope to keep going as long as I can…

We will have another ‘Dave’ for you tomorrow… ho ho ho

Had some great battles with the ‘youngest of Daves’ – Tynedale 10m,Jarrow 10k and the Blaydon race to name but a few , dont let the Young Dave lead you into any false pretences by his nice nature and good all round bloke as he can be the most ruthless of runners, he does not give up and when you think you have the better of him he comes back for more and leaves you broken (remember Blaydon 2003 Dave). Even the Embleton and Coach Anderson has come struck against the Youngest !

Another top bloke (must be something to do with the name) and what a great attitude to have regarding running. But if there’s one thing i know about Dave, he’ll be doing his damnest to run as quick as possible in every race.
