This Girl Can!

Sport England are currently running a national campaign to increase women’s participation in physical activity and sport called “This Girl Can!”and Tyne Bridge Harriers were in attendance at the Newcastle launch event of This Girl Can on Sunday 8th March in the Banqueting Hall of the Civic Centre in Newcastle (reports Vicki Deritis).

An audience of several hundred enjoyed an afternoon which included the premiere of the “Newcastle Girls Can” film, a keynote speech by Katie Bulmer Cooke (UK Fitness Professional of the Year 2013), an address from Cllr Joyce McCarty, a dance performance from Factory Dance Academy, Newcastle This Girl Can ambassadors’ stories, top Newcastle comedian Nicola Mantos-Lovett and a delicious high tea.

We pride ourselves on being an inclusive running club, believing running should be accessible to everyone, regardless of age, gender or ability. We already have a membership that is comprised of over 45% female, many of whom were new to running and found Tyne Bridge to be a welcoming and supportive introduction to the experience.

Our beginners group held on Wednesday evening is a perfect way for those who are uncertain of what to expect, to start to enjoy the benefits of running in a group. At this session the runs are no longer than three miles and ran at the pace of the slowest runner, at Tyne Bridge nobody gets left behind. Many of our members have started their journey in our beginners group and as they have become more confident have moved into the main club groups on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Our group structures are there to help and develop our members to achieve their goals and provide an ideal pathway into running without any pressure and with enjoyment being at the heart of what we do.

We are also proud to have a number of our members identified as This Girl Can ambassadors, these include Deborah AireyJane ShearerSophie Wardrobe, Jenny Headland, Rachel Griffiths, Emma Brooks and Faye Slade. They will always be on hand to help and encourage anybody who comes along as part of the initiative and to provide additional support and advice.

This is why TBH are happy to be a part of the This Girl Can initiative.

The Tyne Bridge Harriers who attended the event were Jane Shearer, Jenny Headland, Rachel Griffiths, Deborah Airey, Emma Brookes, Sara James and Vicki Deritis.
