TBH: Here, there & everywhere

Lynne Cornell’s trip to the top of Kilimanjaro with TBH shirt!

Whilst I didn’t run to the top of Kilimanjaro I did reach the top on Wednesday 17th October at 08.15 in the morning along with my TBH shirt!

Fortunately I had ordered extra large and this fitted over the 8 layers I was wearing! This was after 6 days trekking to acclimatise especially for the altitude. The final push to the summit started at 11.00 the night before and involved 7 hours trekking in the dark followed by 2 hours of walking as the sun rose and the most breath-taking scenery unfolded.

The peak is 5895 metres (or 19341 feet for those who work in old money) above sea-level and the highest mountain in Africa. Also only 50% of normal oxygen in the air at the top and minus 20 with wind chill making it minus 30!  The experience of a life time! Amazing and I consider myself very fortunate to have been able to do this whilst raising money for such a good cause (MacMillan Cancer Support) at the same time.

I joined TBH a year ago. I had never run before and knew that whilst I was quite fit having done a lot of long distance walking challenges in the past I had to get fitter. It does not seem like a year ago that Mr Allerdyce at a Halloween walk told me to come along to TBH and that I would enjoy running! How right he was – thank you to everyone at the club especially Steve Allerdyce, Denise, Mickey and Dave Anderson. I really feel that the running made a huge difference and played a massive part in me reaching the top.

p.s. the TBH shirt is now residing in Tanzania as I gave it to one of the guides having first managed to explain that we are not a football club and it was not a football shirt !!!! So it will be having a few more trips to the top. Wish I could join it.
